Apple has yet to release its final 1.0 version of its web browser, named “Safari”, but Microsoft has already announced it is stopping development of Internet Explorer for the Macintosh because of the new browser. Okay, reality check: Microsoft is not running scared from Safari, they simply have no interest in continuing development.
Most web sites these days are optimized for Internet Explorer as it maintains a 95% market share (with Netscape at 3% and the rest under 1%). Internet Explorer has always been built as a tool to incent consumers to use the Windows OS, but Microsoft had to build and maintain IE for Mac because of a five-year deal with Apple which has now expired.
I wonder if IE for Linux is next on the chopping block.
